With the FDA’s recent emergency authorization of Pfizer’s BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, Island County is expecting to receive initial allocation of the vaccine in the coming weeks.
The Island County Department of Emergency Management issued a press release yesterday offering preliminary information regarding the rollout of the vaccine.
According to guidance from the State of Washington Department of Health, a phased rollout will be implemented for the delivery of the vaccine. Staff at Whidbey Health and those responsible for the direct care of COVID-19 patients, as well as 1st responders, will be the first recipients during the first phase of administration.
According to Whidbey Health, up to 1600 local healthcare providers will begin receiving the vaccination today and throughout the next 14 days. Phase 1A participants will be able to schedule appointments for vaccination through an online scheduling system that will be made available to them through their employers.
A continued phased approach for distribution to our community, prioritizing risk categories, will follow starting in early 2021.
The Island County Free Press is gathering more detailed information and will report on these matters more completely in the near term.
